Columbus – Unveiling a scathing Inspector General report that indicates the U.S. E.P.A has failed to conduct environmental audits on sites including the WTI facility in E. Liverpool Ohio, an alliance of Ohio groups announced the creation of Ohio Citizens for Health Environment and Justice.
Led by Lois Gibbs, known for her pioneering work on Love Canal, allies united together include the Ohio Environmental Council, the Ohio NAACP, the Save Our County organization in East Liverpool and the Buckeye Environmental Network, announced the formation of an Ohio group to monitor and advocate on behalf of groups like the citizens of East Liverpool.
“We know from their own internal investigations that our own government has failed to live up to its own standards for auditing environmental impacts of sites like WTI,” said Gibbs. “What is clear is that Ohioans need to use neighborhood advocacy to protect their families health and welfare.”
Late last month the Inspector General of the U.S. E.P.A. issued a far-reaching report criticizing the Bush Administrations enforcement of Environmental Justice issues at key sites – the W.T.I. facility in East Liverpool, Ohio is among those sites.
OHEJ plans on calling for an Ohio Environmental Justice Commission to conduct public hearings throughout 2007 to identify environmental health issues throughout Ohio. “This is a ground up approach where we will give Ohio neighborhoods the tools to demand environmental justice for their families. We cannot allow environmental impacts to be eroded due to a policy of non-enforcement of existing regulations,” said Alonzo Spencer, of the Save Our County organization. “Ohioans will have the tools to demand justice and their health in areas that have unusually high health risks such as cancer and birth defects.” |
